Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-Main), formerly All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), is an all India standardised computer-based test held at an undergraduate level for offering admissions in some of the best engineering and technical institutions that are Government funded or privately owned. 

The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The rank secured in the JEE-Main helps the candidate to secure admission in the premier universities such as the National Institute of Technology and Indian Institutes of Information Technology.  

More significantly, students are granted admission to IITs, CFITs, NITs, and other Government funded technical institutes based on the marks obtained in JEE Main. Also, the top 2,50,000 students from JEE Main will qualify to appear for JEE Advanced.

Since 2021, the test is being conducted 4 times every year, spanning from February to May. The first session of JEE Main exam was conducted in February 2021.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

• Age Limit:

There is no age limit to appear for JEE MAIN

• Qualifying Exams:

Cleared class 12 or an equivalent exam from a recognised board/university. Candidates appearing for the class 12 exam in 2022 can also apply.

• Number of Attempts:

Candidates can appear for the JEE Main exam for three consecutive years.

• Compulsory Subjects:

Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational Subject.

DETAILS REQUIRED FOR JEE MAIN APPLICATION FORM (ONLINE):

• PC with a good internet connection.
• Details of qualification.
• Scanned copy of passport photograph. It has to be clear, in JPG/JPEG format and the image size has to be between 10 kb–200 kb.
• Digital copy of the candidate’s signature in JPG/JPEG format with the image size between 4 kb–30 kb.
• Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS etc.) and the file size: 50kb to 300KB).
• PwD certificate (file size: 50kb to 300kb) in jpg/jpeg format.
• Working e-mail id.
• Valid mobile number.
• A printer to print the confirmation page.

NTA will also provide a one-time correction facility to make all the required changes in the form. For the new session, the correction window will be opened on certain dates which will be announced by the exam authority. Additional fees have to be paid.

As per the official notification, no correction will be allowed after the submission of the final application. Moreover, candidates have to know that no change will be accepted even if they send a request by post, fax, email, or by hand.

• The exam conducting body has also said the exam will be set in 13 different languages including English, Hindi, Urdu and also in regional languages including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

NTA has introduced the new exam pattern for the upcoming 2021 exam. Meanwhile, the registration and application process for the February session started in December. This time JEE Main (Paper 1) will be conducted in four sessions namely February, March, April and May sessions. However, B. Arch and B. Planning papers (papers 2A and 2B) will be held only twice a year in the months of February and May 2021

The JEE Main syllabus is still the same as the previous year. No new changes have been introduced regarding the syllabus.

SOME OF THE IMPORTANT TOPICS TO FOCUS ON FOR JEE MAIN ARE:

• PHYSICS:

While preparing, pay extra attention to chapters like System of Particles and Rotational Motion, Current Electricity, Electrical Potential and Capacitance, Ray Optics and Units and Measurement etc. as these are extremely important.

On the other hand, fewer questions are asked from Mechanical properties of solids, Magnetism and Matter and Kinetic Theory of Gases etc.

• CHEMISTRY:

While Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Bio-molecules, Polymer, Aldehyde Ketone and Carboxylic acids, Equilibrium, Coordinate Compounds etc. constitute the major part of the Chemistry paper, Qualitative Analysis, General principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements and Surface Chemistry etc. have less number of questions in the exam.

• MATHEMATICS

Thoroughly prepare chapters like 3-Dimensional Geometry, Applications of Derivatives, Limits, Continuity and Differentiability and Matrices and Determinants as they constitute a higher number of questions in JEE (Main) exam.

General/Previous Year JEE Main Syllabus Analysis

The questions from physics were more calculative than theoretical. Overall, the section was moderate in terms of difficulty and length. Chemistry was the easiest in comparison to the other two sections, with the difficulty curve quite similar to last year. The questions were more theoretical and direct, making it the quickest section to solve. The mathematics section was considered the toughest mainly because of its lengthiness. The overall difficulty of questions from JEE Main syllabus was in between easy to moderate.

BRIEF ADVISORY REGARDING COVID-19 PANDEMIC:

Candidates are advised to carry only the following with them into the examination venue:

• Admit card along with Self Declaration (Undertaking) downloaded from the NTA Website
• clear printout on A4 size paper) duly filled in.
• A simple transparent Ball Point Pen.
• Additional photograph, to be pasted on the attendance sheet.
